For the past thirty years, I have been a manufacturer's rep; I sell electronics. I also love to cook. I have entered a few cooking contests and I also have made my own barbecue sauce for the last 35 years. About 15 years ago I started handing out my sauce (made in my kitchen) in mason jars to my customers. Then I met up with my business partner a few years later and he started handing out my sauce to his customers.
In sales, it's common for people to give away things like calendars, cups, mugs, pens, desk sets, and many other promotional items. But that's what everybody gives away! My barbecue sauce is a one-of-a kind item. Instead of a calendar I'll hand you a jar of barbecue sauce and you will definitely remember me. The reason is because the barbecue sauce is unique.
One day I looked up and said to my partner, "You know? I'm spending 2 or 3 days a week making barbecue sauce." I didn't have time to sell anything. I had people asking for cases and I was only making 2 1/2 cases a week. I couldn't keep up. That's when I formed a company called "My Favorite Foods, Inc." and found a packer to make my product for me. My sauce is called "My Favorite Barbecue and Dipping Sauce." I looked at several companies before settling on the packer I chose. The main reason for my decision was that he was familiar with handling fresh ingredients, and I use fresh onions and fresh garlic in my recipe.
Over the years we have discovered that this barbecue sauce is a fantastic promotional product. I have visited potential customers, and then not called on them again for as long as a year later. And when I call them a year later and say, "Hi! It's Tom Gates," they don't have a clue who I am. Then I say "I'm the barbecue sauce man." And they reply, "Hey Tom! How are ya! Sure you can come by on short notice." If I had given them a calendar a year before they never would have remembered me. And that's only one story out of hundreds. My partner travels Alabama and Georgia, and there he's known as the "Barbecue Sauce Man". My sauce is delicious. I'll bet you it will become one of your top two or three favorite sauces if you taste it. It may even become "Your Favorite".
I decided to private label my barbecue sauce for other sales organizations and let them reap the fantastic benefits of this delicious promotional product. They can put their name on it and give it away to their customers as a promotional item. Most people will like it, or their spouse will like it, or their kids will like it, and so on. When they run out, they can't wait for you to return. Imagine a customer or potential customer who can't wait for you to return. A calendar lasts a whole year. My sauce may be gone in a week. It's a very effective promotional product! My phone number is actually on the label of my barbecue sauce because I want to be accessible to my customers.
My phone number is 321-259-6210.

Tom Gates
